Frequently asked questions
1. What are Organizer's main features? Top
Organizer is a powerful and easy to learn personal and business organizer with more than 30 integrated applications. Manage your records and contacts, and review previous correspondence instantly. Every contact is automatically saved, so you do not have to name each document and assign it to a folder on your hard-disk. Organizer lets you group and filter your records as you want, so you can find any record or group of records in an instant.
Organizer integrates applications for which you would otherwise need separate software: manage subscriptions to newsletters, publications and campaigns, control your multiple currency personal and business banking, set up invoices and stock-taking and do much, much more. Read more about what the program can do for you.
2. What are Notebook's main features? Top
Notebook is a perfect program to manage your information and correspondence, whether letters, faxes or e-mails, and automatically opens your client program when you send an e-mail.
Simple to use because there is only one field, so you can keep any information in whatever format you want.
Powerful because
fast text searches through the Index, Notes and Correspondence lets you
find any information in a second.
Notes can be organized by category and filtered using keywords. You can
also use keyword prompts for each category: when you add a new Note you
just fill in the blanks.
3. What are Cardfile's main features? Top
Cardfile is easy to use, and lets you store and retrieve data quickly - notes, memos, addresses, phone numbers, CD and DVD collections, text copied from the internet, recipes and any other type of information.
4. Can I upgrade from Cardfile? Top
Yes. Many users begin with Cardfile, but then want to make use of Notebook's many features - such as managing correspondence and linking items together. You can do this easily, and without losing any of your Cardfile data.
Just download Notebook then do File >Import options>Import cards from Freedom Cardfile.
5. Can Notebook and Organizer be used on a network? Top
Yes. The number of people who can be on a network is limited by your own resources. With a network the programs are installed on a server computer rather than individual computers, and all users then share the database from their separate workstations. This means that when someone adds data the information is instantly accessible to any other network user.
6. Can I import names and addresses from my old database? Top
Yes. It is easy to import records from all commonly used spreadsheet and database programs, including Act!, Goldmine and Maximizer.
For example, if you want to import contacts you have in Microsoft Outlook, open Outlook then bring down the File menu and choose 'Import and Export'. Select the 'Export to a file' option then 'Comma Separated Values' (CSV). Once you have created this CSV file the only requirement is to rename your column headings. Renaming column headings is a simple process: there is a detailed Help file in the programs' import utility which shows you exactly what to do.
7. Can I import my data between Cardfile, Notebook and Organizer? Top
Because the databases are structured differently there are some limitations: Cardfile users can quickly and easily import all their items to Notebook.
If you use Organizer you can import to Notebook your names, addresses and contact details as well as all items in Organizer's Notes feature. Just bring down the File menu in Notebook and choose 'Import Options>Import data from Freedom Organizer'.
You cannot import to Organizer, which is structured differently.
8. How do I backup the programs? I spend a lot of time sorting my files by date in Explorer to make sure that I make a backup copy of everything I have worked on recently. Top
All your data is stored in one file - Notedata (for Notebook), Freedata (for Organizer) and Carddata (for Cardfile). Everything is saved automatically, so you never need to assign file names, paths and folders, or try to remember where a particular letter, e-mail or Note has been stored.
With only one file, backing up your work daily or weekly will only take a few seconds: create another folder in Explorer (File>New>Folder) and name it (perhaps NotedataCopy or FreedataCopy). Then click the Freedata file in the C:\Freedom folder and drag or copy and paste it to this new folder. Alternatively you can make a copy of your data file on a CD, tape or floppy disk. To copy a large data file to a floppy disk you may need to compact it first, in which case you will need to use a program such as WinZip
9. I get an error message when I try to Zip my files during backup
It is good policy to backup your files regularly, since this is your important data. Depending on the program, your data file will be called Carddata, Notedata or Freedata. If you want to zip your files you MUST close down the appropriate program - Cardfile, Organizer or Notebook - before zipping your files, since no file can be zipped if it is open.
10. Can I secure my data from unauthorized access? Top
Yes. In Notebook bring down the Options menu and select 'Protect your Notebook', then choose a password. Only password holders will have access to your data. You can unprotect your database at any time. In Organizer you must set up an Owner password. This is needed if you want to have an optional Security system password (to open the program from the 'Welcome' screen), or delete a user's Personal Information File (where individuals can store information using their own passwords). It is not possible to password protect your data in Cardfile.
11. Can I restrict access to certain documents or records? Top
Yes. Organizer gives you complete control over who can access your records and contacts - just assign a password to make all previous or subsequent contacts for a record classified, or make individual contacts classified. This is a uniquely flexible way to determine who has access to records and contacts, and protect sensitive information from being read by unauthorised users. The confidential status of a record or contact can be removed at the click of a button.

the 30-day trial period you will need to purchase a registration number.

Free technical support (support@freedomsoftware.net) is available whether you have registered your copy of Cardfile, Organizer or Notebook, or are using the programs on a trial basis.
14. When I open the program it says the database is corrupted. What do I do? Top
It is rare for your database to become corrupted, but it may happen, for example, if there is a sudden power surge or sag. There is a simple routine to repair your database: make sure that the program is closed, then click the 'Start' button and go to 'Programs/Freedom Organizer[or Notebook]/Repair Freedom [or Notebook]'. There is also a 'Repair Freedata [or Notedata]' option in the very unlikely event that your data becomes corrupted. The repair routine only takes a few seconds and you will then be able to run the programs as normal.
15. Can the programs be used on a Mac computer? Top
Notebook, Organizer and Cardfile are Windows applications. They can work on any version of Windows - 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, NT and XP and all Special Editions - but it is not currently possible to run the programs using Macintosh.
16. What about upgrades?Top
We are continually improving these three great programs, incorporating new features and easier ways for you to manage your data. Installing them does not affect your data in any way. You must have already downloaded the programs to make use of the upgrades, which are free.
17. Can I link external files to Cardfile, Notebook and Organizer?Top
Links to external files, graphics and logos are often prone to error: the stability of the database engine can be compromised, resulting in system crashes, while adding GIF or JPG files drastically expands your database, which slows its performance and can lead to your computer freezing up. Since Freedom Software have no control over what happens when links between your database and an external file (such as a picture) is lost (if you have deleted the picture, for example) we are not incorporating this feature with Notebook and Organizer.
18. I get a message that Windows cannot run a 16-bit program Top
If you receive this error message after downloading Cardfile, Notebook or Organizer it indicates that your copy of Windows has outdated, missing, or damaged DLL files. You can either recover the files from your Windows disk, or request Notebook or Organizer on a CD
19. Do I lose my data when I purchase the program after the 30-day trial?
No. All your data is saved, so you can continue to use the programs as normal
20. What are the system requirements? Top
The programs run on any version of Windows, from 3.0 to XP. Efficient and compact, the system requirements are met by most computers. You will need an SVGA monitor, and it is recommended that you have 50MB free hard disk space for installation.
